Safety comes first -
tips for bicycling in Croatia
Safe biking is important also in Croatia.
Please read the following tips carefully:
- The rider of a bicycle must wear a helmet if she/he is 16 years old or younger!
We recommend that even older people also use helmets too!
- When biking on the street you must ride a bicycle one after another and not side by side!
We were stopped by policeman - at 03.00 o'clock in the morning - and he told us to ride behind each other, and there was no other traffic on the street. This is not a joke.
- The asphalt can be slippery, if the sun is burning hot or if it is rainy!
You should keep this in mind when you bike on the streets in the city (especially crossings) as well as on the country roads.
- Please mind the car drivers and other participants with motorised vehicles.
You can often see how a car driver overtakes a biker just before a crossing with traffic lights or gateways.
- Mountainbikers and hikers are equal in Croatia.
This means that both show consideration for each other!
Mountainbikers usually get a frendly “hello” from the locals when riding off road.
And “off road” does not mean the “beach”.
- Especially on the coast you can see "Privat" and "Privatno" signs, which means: Private - please do not enter.
This is valid also for bikers.
- All the gates, doors etc. should be left as they were before.
There are not many of them but the owners (usually farmers or shepherds)
will be happy with that.
- If a road or a trail is blocked, you should also accept it and not try to go there.
There are some beautiful trails in Ravni Kotari and on the coast of Dalmatia, which have been closed. The reason for that might be the fact, that “travellers” have been taking the fruit from the trees etc. to refresh themselves.
IMPORTANT: Please keep in mind the signs and warnings for land mines!
especially if you are near the ex-front line or if you cross the fields or the areas where cluster bombs were used.
Even if they have swept and searched the area several times for land mines, this does not mean that it is 100% clean.
You will find more information about these areas here.
